Information: Identification and Threats
Hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) is an insect that that infests eastern hemlock trees, and is originally from East Asia. It feeds by sucking sap from hemlock trees, killing needles, shoots and branches. If not treated, it can result in tree death in about 4 to 10 years. It has been detected in western Michigan in both forest and landscape settings, and was recently found in Washtenaw County! If you have hemlock trees on your property, check them for small, white, cottony masses found at the base of needles or on the underside of hemlock branches. While they are present year-round, they most visible November through July. Please read on for more information on this species, and contact us if you have any questions!
